Choice: may matter later

Well today I took off work and headed to WHS with Sue. She had arranged for me to talk with six of the health classes about "choices" and how that may not matter tomorrow but that they could matter later.

I talked about having diabetes, a kidney transplant, being legally blind, etc. Also told them that I might not have as many or as severe issues had I taken better care of my blood sugar when I was their age.

The two points that I think made the largest impact were the fact that I do not drive. They are all ready to get the drivers license. The other was the fact that if they choose to not get any exercise and choose to eat too much than they may be choosing to get type II diabetes and may bo choosing to get a number of the same troubles that I have.

It was amazing about many kids raised their hands when asked about diabetes in their family. Well over half.

Hoping at least a few of them will consider making better choices that sitting in front of the TV and eating chips/cookies all night!!

Was reading some of your backlog blog posts - although I know this dates back to May, I just wanted to say that this is really cool you did that. You didn't tell me you did that. Sounds like a really enriching experience for the kids... and you (?) !
Take care,
